Postcard from La Tomatina
La Tomatina is basically one giant food fight that occurs for one hour on the last Wednesday of every August in a tiny town outside of Valencia, Spain. Since being established (rather accidentally) in 1945, banned in the 1950s and approved (and funded) by the City Councils in 1980, it’s grown to become an International Fiesta of Tourist Interest.
It seems like there are more Aussie backpackers than Bunol-ites throwing tomatoes: the locals stay in their upstairs apartments, heaving buckets of water over the crowd. Either way, this bizarre festival is a great excuse to start drinking sangria early and chuck a tomato at someone’s head–both of which are surprisingly refreshing.
