A weekend at Wilderness Field Notes
A confession that is likely not very surprising: I’m not much of a camper. I quite enjoy those lovely modern amenities like mattresses and indoor plumbing, and I’m not very willing to sacrifice them. That said, I love being outside in clean, fresh air (aka: not outside on the loud and dirty streets of Manhattan) and enjoying a bit of a digital detox. Enter: Wilderness Field Notes. It’s a weekend of woodsy workshops and disconnecting in the Adirondacks, complete with whiskey tasting, watercoloring, canoeing and lots of quiet reflection by a beautiful lake. Bonus: the foliage and the weather were absolutely on-point last weekend! It was full of sunshine and blue skies and bursts of red and yellow leaves. Even though it’s a serious drive from New York City for just a weekend, it was totally worth it: we had such a fun time, and I just couldn’t get enough of how beautiful it all was! We started the morning with a canoe ride around Minerva Lake. Although it looks super chilly because of our outfits, that’s mostly because we splurged on new (basically matching) beanies from the Narrative Space pop-up. My one concession to winter coming soon! Narrative Space store dog! His name is Osiris and he was just the sweetest. This is the entrance to Morningside Camps and Cabins. REAL LIFE. Even if you don’t come to Wilderness Field Notes, I still totally recommend this place to rent a cute little cabin by the lake. The third-generation owners are super sweet and helpful, and it’s just a gorgeous location. Rumor has it there is a rope swing on an island in the middle of the lake, which makes me want to come back in summer! One of my favorite parts of the weekend: the watercolor session! Even though I’m not much of an artist, I still find it super meditative to sit down with a set of paints–and I must say, I think my Lady Gert is a true masterpiece. Although I didn’t dye anything in the natural dying workshop, I love the dip-dye sweater that my friend Sarah (owner of our favorite Frenchie Simba) made. There was a sawing competition! These guys didn’t win, but they’re still my favorites.
There was a happy hour sponsored by Bulleit, where I discovered my new favorite fall drink: Kentucky Mules! It’s bourbon, ginger beer and lime and it is SO delicious. I think what I’ve learned about myself is that I really just love ginger beer (with or without alcohol in it), and I need to start keeping it stocked at home. Nothing better than waking up in the woods to hot coffee and eggs and bacon on the griddle!
