The NYPL Rose Room re-opens today!
After two long years of restoration, the Rose Main Reading Room in the New York Public Library opens to the public today! I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek yesterday morning, and it is such a wonderfully reverent space in the middle of a chaotic city. It’s designated as a space for research and quiet study, and I can’t think of a better place to be inspired. A few fun facts about the Rose Main Reading Room: it officially opened in 1911, it’s the length of TWO city blocks and nearly the length of a football field, and it holds about 52,000 books. It’s absolutely beautiful and feels so grand: if you’re a bibliophile, it can’t be missed when you’re in New York City.
My favorite part of walking to the library: the literary plaques that line 41st Street. I always find one that resonates perfectly for that moment! Here is another favorite. When I first moved to New York City, my office was just a few blocks from here. It felt so New York to commute through Grand Central and eat my lunch on the steps of the library every day. While I’m glad that I no longer work in Midtown, I always reminisce about those days so fondly. HELLO ROSE ROOM. Next time I need a bit of inspiration (or even right now–I’ve been suffering from a bit of writer’s block lately), I might head here for a writing sesh. I feel like being surrounded by all those scholarly words and all that gorgeous architecture might be just what I need to get me out of a funk. (ALTHOUGH: this is my 1,001st blog post! Isn’t that crazy!) Special thanks to the New York Public Library and the team at Instagram/Facebook for inviting me to be part of such a fun morning!
Have you ever visited the New York Public Library? Are you excited for the Rose Room to re-open?
p.s. the Morgan Library and the Providence Athenaeum are two other top bibliophile destinations!
