A bit “ehhh” about Eze

A bit “ehhh” about Eze

It’s hard to keep up the “tourist” mentality when you’re working, writing, studying French, running errands and attempting to have a social life. In short, only having one morning to sleep in each week makes it hard to want to wake up early enough to do anything–before my shift at the bar starts at 5 p.m.

In attempt to take my own advice, I set aside Saturday to visit Eze-le-Village, a medieval village in the scenic cliffs between Nice and Monaco. I refused my after-work drink on Friday night, woke up semi-early on Saturday morning and grabbed a (1 Euro!) train to Eze. I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up to clouds–at least my educational excursion wouldn’t mean missing a beach day!

However, I quickly realized that a cloudy day also ruins a picturesque view of the Côte d’Azur from Eze, which is situated 1400 feet above the sea. I wandered around the Jardin-d’Eze (exotic gardens), the main tourist draw in Eze, waiting for the clouds to lift. A bit disappointed, as it cost 5 Euros to just see a bunch of cacti. I was hoping for some really pretty flowers!

While it was a postcard-worthy view, next time I head to Eze, I plan to hike the same trail (seen in the bottom right of this photo) that Friedrich Nietzche drew inspiration from while writing the third part of “Thus Spoke Zarathustra.” There’s not much else to see in this sleepy town situated high on the cliffs, but the hike is supposed to be well worth it–and I need something to work off all this ice cream!
