Challenge of the cornet: Nutella edition
Birthday week meant I blew off most responsibilities, took uber-long naps and didn’t think twice about eating dessert first. Even though my birthday dessert was officially chocolat fondant (think brownie mix right before it goes in the oven–heavenly), I still found room to squeeze in some ice cream.
My best choice was ending my birthday with a scoop of Nutella ice cream. Instead of going out for more drinks after a lovely dinner with lots of meat and red wine, I decided to head to Fennochio for a treat. I’d been saving Nutella for a special occasion, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Nocciolato/ Nutella: A nice balance of chocolate and hazelnut, with a ribbon of Nutella. It wasn’t as overwhelmingly Nutella-flavored as I was hoping for, but I’m sure that this understated-ness makes it appealing to more people. Obviously, if you’re as Nutella-obsessed as you all know I am, I highly recommend this gem.
Mûre/Blackberry: Since this was a sorbet, it was much lighter and fresher than other ice creams. The flavor was delicate, but still berry-licious. Honestly, though, I prefer cassis. I adore blackberries, but this just wasn’t a strong enough taste to please me.
Yaourt/Yogurt: Before there was Fennochio, there was Jon & Bon’s. The local frozen yogurt shop in my college town was the spot of countless dates, with boyfriends and best friends. After the to-die-for cheesecake flavor (this American goodness has yet to be spotted in France), my favorite flavor was Tart. Yogurt flavor was the creamier, richer version of Tart–fresh and tangy, the perfect summer accompaniment to a fruit flavor.
Pain d’épice/ Gingerbread: I don’t know why I thought “spice bread” was just going to be a type of baguette ice cream. Wishful thinking, I suppose. However, the first bite immediately conjured up images of gingerbread houses, Nutcracker music and hot chocolate–in a word, it tasted like Christmas. There are huge chunks of fresh gingerbread in the ice cream,
Cocoa: Rich, dark, delicious chocolate. If you’re a pure chocolate fan, this one’s not to be missed. It’s quite an intense chocolate flavor–but all the better for chocoholics! I loved it, but I’m big on dark chocolate.
