You can close the beaches, but you can’t take our sunshine

Another epic windstorm hit Nice last week–one of those days where you walk outside and literally feel like you might be blown away. I saw a flower pot blow off a fourth-story window in Old Nice and shatter just inches from people walking below. The wind gusts were strong enough to close down the beaches for the day.

Last time the wind was this crazy, the Mediterranean stirred up 30-foot waves, the highest in 100 years, destroying private beaches all along the French Riviera. This time, police were patrolling to keep people off the beaches and out of the water. While the Mediterranean is normally very calm, undercurrents can become very unsafe for swimmers who aren’t used to it when it becomes agitated. Read: every single beach-goer slash tourist in Nice.

Despite the choppy water and howling wind, the sun was shining and desperate tan-seekers set up shop on the Promenade. The one benefit of Nice’s rocky beaches? At least the wind won’t blow sand in your eyes…although it might just blow away your mat.
