Postcard from Oxford

Postcard from Oxford

I’m lucky enough to be friends with an Oxford University student, and thus was able to score not only a private tour of the town and university, but also get an inside look into student life at the first university in the English-speaking world. Needless to say, the beauty and history of the campus puts my alma mater, California State University, Chico to shame.

Streets of Oxford

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Oxford to see the campus in action–my friend had more work than I ever thought possible for an undergraduate! For my first time outside of London, I tried to be as English as possible: eating pie, drinking tea (although I couldn’t bring myself to put milk in it), and buying lots of Topshop. Needless, it was a delightful weekend–and has me seriously considering a Masters…

My first steak and ale pie!
My first steak and ale pie at Pie Minister. Two thumbs up for the pie itself, but two thumbs down on mushy peas. One part of English cuisine that I just can’t embrace.

Lincoln College Library
The more pressing issues of Oxford University scholars.

Lincoln College Library
The library used to be a chapel. Needless to say, there are worse places in which to study.

Magdalen College Deer Park
Magdalen College has its own deer park. And I thought my university was cool for having a creek that runs through campus!

Magdalen College Hall
Magdalen College Hall. Yes, this is where students actually eat. Can you say Hogwarts?!

Pitt Rivers Museum
Pitt Rivers Museum: shrunken heads, intense body art, feather capes. What more could you ask for?

Student housing
This student housing puts the Chico dorms and the sorority houses to shame.

Only at Oxford...
This cracked me up! We complained more about the music from the bars interrupting our parties than chattering people bothering our studying.
