Postcard from the Victorian rainforest
Did you know that Victoria has a rainforest? Maybe I’m showcasing my geography illiteracy, but I didn’t. Sure, there’s the rainforest up in Queensland (now I’m just trying to sound smart–I didn’t know about that until I arrived in Australia either)–but in Victoria? We’re just a hop, skip and a Tasman Sea away from Antarctica. Aren’t rainforests supposed to be hot? How is this possible?
OK, I’ll lay the questions aside for a moment and focus on the greenery. When driving along the Great Ocean Road, you not only zip along coastal cliffs but you also hum through rainforests. We stopped at Maits Rest, the sort of place where the tree roots are so big that they tower over you. We also splurged on the Australian Treetop Adventures, learning about what a cantilever is, walking among the treetops and spiraling up to the tip-top of the rainforest level (unfortunately, didn’t have the time or money to spend on the zipline, which probably would have been awesome). It was a beautiful–and very humid–respite from all those coastal vistas.
