Postcard from Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai isn’t as breathtaking as the islands in the Andaman Sea or as bustling as Bangkok; indeed, the northern Thailand city is laid-back and livable. The streets are lined with food carts attached to motorbikes, selling tangy papaya salad, piping hot steamed pork buns, smoothies of every fruit persuasion. There are countless wats duck in to and admire the giant golden Buddhas, plenty of quiet alleys to wander down.
The problem with cities seems to be that they block out all the good sky: even if it wasn’t as gorgeous as open skies over the sea, the clear blue skies and nuanced clouds at the end of the day caught my eye. Even though I wasn’t fully in tourist mode while in Chiang Mai; the city still served up intriguing details and bursts of color tangled in with neutral backdrops.
