Date idea: a show at the Carlyle!
The Upper East Side seems like a whole different world from Brooklyn: the sidewalks are clean, the glass is gleaming, the women wear furs without a hint of irony. The air smells more of glamour than garbage, and every building seems to have a storied history (whether of the Rockefeller or Gossip Girl era).
The Carlyle is one such institution: completed in 1930, every American president since Truman has visited, in addition to Royals and heads-of-state from England, Denmark, Greece, Spain and Sweden. We headed uptown for a break from Brooklyn: a steak and a show amidst some luxury and glamour. I fell in love with the details of Café Carlyle and Bemelmen’s Bar: the painted murals, the classic cocktails, the men in jackets.
Gold details on the bathroom door: I adore that profile!
One of my “fixed life envy” dreams is to have a rotary phone: they’re such a fun relic of a history that’s not too far gone, even if we can’t imagine a life without iPhones.
Fresh flowers in the bathroom–and there was a worker in a classic maid’s uniform!
Obviously, thrilled to see this print of Jackie O in the entry.
I know I’m supposed to be a vegetarian as part of yoga teacher training (and I have been!), but holy moly–how can you say no to a steak like that?
We heard a bossa nova show that was simply fantastic–the piano player was incredibly talented, and it was so fun to hear live music with a soul.
Note: Café Carlyle kindly offered us a complimentary dinner and show, but all opinions are my own.
