Of the moment // 1.9.14
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!
In celebrations this week: Tuesday was my boyfriend’s birthday! We headed to St. Anselm for the best $16 steak in Brooklyn (and perhaps the best truffle-fried mashed potatoes in the world), and then had drinks at Commodore where (surprise!) his friends kept showing up. It was a super fun night–we feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many good people in Brooklyn! And the birthday fun doesn’t end there: last year, I surprised my boyfriend with tickets to the Dominican Republic for his birthday. The journey might not be quite as adventurous, but we’re flying to Fort Lauderdale TONIGHT for a weekend of sunshine and relaxation. Yay!
Looks
It finally started to feel like winter this week! We had a beautiful little dusting of snow on Tuesday morning, and then the temperature hovered around 20 degrees for the rest of the week. Perfect time to finally break out my favorite vintage fur coat and splurge on a brand-new beanie!
Drinks
My friend Jillian and I are committing to a year of weekly latte dates! We kicked things off a little differently: matcha green tea lattes at the just-opened Chalait in West Village. Side note: the signet ring above was my grandmother’s and the turquoise ring is my mom’s from the 70’s. I love being reminded of my family whenever I wear them.
Eats
I finally caught up with my lovely friend Amy earlier this week: she was the cafe manager at Housing Works when I volunteered as a barista there, and now she is a full-time ukulele player/events producer/circus clown extraordinaire. Seriously: she just dropped an album of her ukulele songs and she puts on awesome experiences for Spring Street Social Society! Either way, we chatted over noodles at Momofuku Noodle Bar and oh em gee it’s the perfect savory, warm-you-up meal on a snowy day. (And my boyfriend’s delicious chocolate malt birthday cake was from Momofuku Milk Bar–they know what they’re doing!)
Reads
Over the break, I tore through The Painted Veil. My mom sent it in a Christmas package, and I just loved it. It was written in 1925 and set in Hong Kong in the early 1920s: it’s basically a turn-of-the-century beach read full of scandal and deceit. Bonus: it made me especially curious to travel to Hong Kong.
Streets
I always spot this little corner of murals in Brooklyn when I walk across the Williamsburg Bridge, but I finally went down and explored. Isn’t it awesome?
Words
“This year, brew the good coffee, wear the sparkly jewelry, crack open that fresh journal. Gifts are to be loved, to be burned, to be eaten and used up completely, reminders that someone loves us, that someone thought of us.” –Shauna Niequist (via my sweet friend Ashlee)
This weekend, we’ll be staying at the W Fort Lauderdale: cue 48 hours of swimming, reading and sipping on tropical cocktails with umbrellas in them. Follow along on the Instagram! What are you up to?
