Postcard from Malibu
Malibu is one of those words that evokes a certain image: even though I’d never been there before, I’ve always imagined it as gorgeous, ritzy, upscale, beachy. It’s often name-dropped in celebrity gossip mags: a place of glass-walled, beachfront, luxury homes and skinny, sun-kissed actresses and expensive, cold-pressed, fresh fruit juices.
We ended up spending the Saturday of our long weekend in Los Angeles, and it was the most lovely day catching up with friends in one of the most beautiful places in California. It was all of those places that was exactly how I imagined it: just as sunny and beautiful and glamorous as the magazines make it out to be.
We took a beautiful drive through Beverly Hills and Westwood and the Pacific Palisades, and then winding up on Highway 1 overlooking the ocean. We popped into the Malibu Country Mart for sandwiches and homemade cookies and juices to take with us, and then had an impromptu picnic on Point Dume Beach.
Even in early March, the weather was spectacular–although my boyfriend and his friend dared each other to go for a swim, and the water was CHILLY!
We then went and met my friend Aly at Malibu Cafe for a lazy afternoon of drinking wine and listening to live music and soaking up all of the sunshine, tucked away in the luscious green hills.
We popped down to Malibu Farm, a restaurant situated on the very tip of the Malibu Pier: we watched the sunset on the open balcony while we nibbled on cheese and crackers and sipped wine, and then had a local, organic meal in the restaurant. Our group for dinner was a hodgepodge of music execs and lawyers, a YouTube sensation who interviews hip-hop stars and a PR player: all very LA.
