One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!Brooklyn Botanic Gardens cherry blossomsIt is officially that fleeting moment in New York City when everything is wonderful and nothing can get anyone down: tulips and daffodils line the streets, the trees are heavy with pink blossoms, the sun is shining and the skies are blue, there’s a gentle breeze and just a hint of humidity. The sidewalk cafes are buzzing with smiling people and chilled white wine, the parks are dotted with picnics and pale bodies. There’s a general impatience to just be outside as much as possible: before the flowers fade to green and a heavy, sticky layer of humidity settles in for summer. So! I’ve been biking to work, taking afternoon walks around Chelsea, eating my salads on a sunny bench on the High Line, scheduling rooftop cocktails and backyard BBQs, spontaneously popping over to Roosevelt Island, and generally photographing every colorful flower I see.

Insider tip: the Brooklyn Botanic Garden opens at 8am, and they’re free on Tuesdays. So! My friend Jillian and I traded in our weekly coffee for cherry blossoms, and even though it was a VERY early start: totally worth it to see all of those gorgeous trees without the weekend crowds. Bonus: extra layers are no longer needed. Reads

For one of my book clubs, we read The Royal We–and I must say, it coincided perfectly with the newest addition to the Royal Family this week! I tore through the book during my plane rides last weekend: it’s such a fascinating look at the realities of the “becoming a princess” fairytale in this day and age. Even though it’s perfect beach read fiction, it certainly makes you reconsider what life is really like for Kate Middleton. Can’t wait for our book club discussion next week!Albert's Garden in East Village, New York CityAlbert's Garden in East Village, New York CityAlbert's Garden in East Village, New York City

New York City

One of the things that I love most about living in the city is that things constantly surprise you. You can take a slightly different walking route, or take out the headphones, or just innocently look to the side and spot something delightful that you’ve never noticed before. Case in point: I was biking home from work on Monday night and noticed  a garden on Second Street–and the gate was open! I popped inside and found a blooming wisteria bush, a goldfish pond and absolutely delicious silence. ‘Twas a good welcome back to the city.

Words

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

This weekend, we’re taking the train to Princeton to hang out with my boyfriend’s sister and her boyfriend and soak up all of that New Jersey space and sunshine. And when we get back to the city on Sunday, we have “family dinner” with a group of our favorite friends–on a big outdoor deck, of course!
