A visit to Dia:Beacon
Along with the Roosevelt Island Tramway, Dia:Beacon is one of those places that I’ve been meaning to go to for ages. My friend Jillian and I decided to take a day trip to the tiny upstate town of Beacon, and it didn’t disappoint. We stopped for lattes (of course!) at Bank Square Coffeehouse on the quite adorable Main Street of Beacon, and then headed to Dia:Beacon before all the city trains arrived. Although the art is sometimes stunning, often thought provoking: the real star of the show is the building itself. The collection is housed in a former Nabisco box printing factory on the banks of the Hudson River: it’s all straight lines and big windows, made of steel, brick, concrete and glass. And the vast majority of the rooms are lit purely by natural light–aka it’s a photographer’s dream.
Although it was a lovely escape from New York City for the day, I think it’d be even better on a warm, sunny day: not only would the light be fantastic IN the museum, but there would be great hiking and exploring along the river. The main exhibition is constantly changing, so we might just have to go back this summer!
