Of the moment // 2.5.16
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!
In true NYC/career/life highlights: I had lunch with Diane Von Furstenburg this week (as a very cool day-job perk). In middle school and high school, I was obsessed with fashion magazines and high fashion and working at a big fashion brand on Fifth Avenue: so this was quite literally my 14-year-old-self’s dream come true. She’s just as fabulous as you’d expect, and it was a bit surreal to actually talk to such an icon. And while I didn’t own a wrap dress before, I definitely want to invest in one now (maybe this classic!). And on a personal note: thanks for all of the positive, thoughtful commentary on my post earlier this week. So grateful for this space and so many incredible readers.
Eats
I know this isn’t anything new, but I’m loving all of the seasonal options at Sweetgreen. The past few times I’ve been running errands in Williamsburg on the weekends, I’ve made a point to swing by Sweetgreen for a solo lunch: the warm lentil bowl on the winter menu is SO GOOD. I rarely cook with lentils, but this bowl makes me want to start trying out new recipes!
Wanderlust
Afar is one of my favorite travel magazines (and Instagram feeds), and I especially loved their recent feature on where to go in 2016. It moved Cuba, Portugal and New Orleans to the top of my list for places I’m daydreaming about. And if you need more ideas, I always love the annual 52 Places to Go feature by the New York Times.
Reads
I’ve been reading The Arrangement every night before bed (a nice break from How to Win Friends and Influence People on the train)–and it’s the perfect way to wind up the day. It’s a sensuous account of a tangled love triangle set in the early 1930’s in California–with a woman writer protagonist!
Drinks
Favorite new cafe alert: Freehold in Williamsburg! I met up with my friend Sarah Ashley (founder of the incredible Salthouse Market) the other morning for dirty chai lattes, and I absolutely loved the space. There are all sorts of neat nooks to camp out with your laptop/book/newspaper–and apparently it turns into a really cool bar at night.
Words
“Don’t blame your parents, don’t blame your boyfriend, don’t blame the weather. Accept the reality, embrace the challenge, and deal with it. Be in charge of your own life. Turn negatives into positives and be proud to be a woman.” -Diane Von Furstenberg, The Woman I Wanted To Be
We’re dog-sitting my favorite little pup all weekend: be prepared for lots of puppy Snapchats. I’m also going to the Kings vs. Nets game with one of my girlfriends from Sacramento tonight (916 pride!) and celebrating a good friend’s birthday with brunch tomorrow. Bonus: my former rooms and BFF Aly is back in town!
