Postcard from dogsledding in Quebec City
Dogsledding was never at the top of my bucket list–until one of my friends raved about it. It was one of the things I was most excited to try during a winter escape to Quebec City, and I’m pleased to say that it exceeded all of my expectations. Not only was the snowy setting scenic and stunning, but the experience itself was an incredible adrenaline rush and quite a workout. And, of course, the dogs were my favorite part. I’m such a dog lover, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about “working dogs.” Even though they were definitely working hard, they were so sweet and sociable–and it was clear that they loved going out on the trails. One of the coolest parts about Les Secrets Nordiques is how open they are about the dogs and their lives: we got to see their kennels, hear about their daily schedules, learn about what they eat (raw meat!). Lots of photos below, but it’s also on video if you’re so inclined!
The morning begins with an overview of what to expect, how to act around the dogs, safety procedures, etc. I had no idea how intense the experience would be, but having more knowledge about how it works and what the dogs are dealing with (like getting too excited and then acting out!) made it all much more manageable. If you go with one other person, one of you will be in charge of “driving” the sled while the other gets to sit in the sled. You’ll always be with a guide, but you’ll essentially be in charge of your own team of dogs. Since I traveled alone, I got the VIP experience: getting to go out with one of the guides who drove the sled. Although I did get a chance to drive the sled myself, it was super reassuring to always be someone who really knew the dogs and the routes and how it all works. Bruno, the owner of Les Secrets Nordiques, went out with me and it was so cool to see how well he knew the dogs and how much he loves his job. Even though the dogs work super hard, they still have fun! Seriously, such a cool experience! I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time. If you have the chance to try out dogsledding, I highly recommend it–and it’s honestly something worth traveling for in the winter.
Have you ever been dogsledding? Would you ever try it?
