Postcard from Whitney Museum of American Art
The new Whitney Museum of American Art in the Meatpacking District is only a few blocks from my office, but it’s taken me a while to get there. It’s been on my list since opening last May, and I finally made it happen on a rainy day last weekend. My friend Sarah (she of Salthouse Market fame!) hadn’t visited yet either, so we decided to catch up while wandering through the collection.
First of all: I love a museum date! Even though the Whitney was quite busy on early Saturday afternoon (there was a crazy line to even get in the door by the time we left), it’s still nice to have plenty of new things to look at while chatting. Even better, the Whitney has Untitled: a luminous New American restaurant helmed by the chef from Gramercy Tavern: we popped in for a glass of rosé when we couldn’t take the crowds! And then we decided to become members: not only were we able to apply that day’s ticket toward the membership, we also saved $40 by getting a membership together. I have grand plans of soaking up sun on the Whitney terrace on my lunch break and taking advantage of the reciprocal membership program at museums like Storm King.
Side note: if you live in New York City and enjoy museums, a membership can be a great investment. For example, it costs $25 for one-time entry to the Whitney, but a membership is $80 (or $125 for two) for unlimited, expedited entry for a year. And there are often members-only events, discounts on dining and merchandise, free or discounted guest passes. I actually belonged to MOMA when I first moved to the city, and it was a really inspiring place to escape as I tried to figure things out. I think that belonging to the Whitney will be just as inspiring in this phase of my life! The view from the terrace: I can’t wait to go back on a sunny day! This was actually huge reason of why I decided to buy a membership: outdoor space in Manhattan can be hard to come by. What’s your favorite photo from the Whitney?
