Of the moment // 5.20.16
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend! It’s graduation season! All week I’ve been seeing students in caps and gowns all over the city, and it makes me feel so nostalgic. I sometimes feel like I graduated from college (and maybe even high school) just yesterday–and other times, it feels like it has been far longer than seven years. I’m grateful that all of my choices have led me to where I am today, but sometimes I think about what I would change if I could go back in time: I’d definitely study abroad, and I’d spend less of my emotional energy worrying about failed relationships, and I’d take more classes in non-practical subjects, like philosophy or English literature. I also spent all of college convincing myself that I wasn’t a good writer–“I was a good editor!”–and I wish I had pushed myself out of my comfort zone to start writing earlier. Alas! Here we are. Congrats to the class of 2016: may the road rise up to meet you.
Drinks
Making smoothies is one of my favorite parts of our morning routine: it feels good to start the day with something healthy AND delicious. My boyfriend always drinks his first thing, but sometimes I put mine in a mason jar and take it with me for a morning snack (since I usually sip on a mug of hot water, lemon, tumeric and honey while I’m getting ready). This week, I swapped out our standard green smoothie for a banana/raspberry/pineapple/coconut water/Greek yogurt + vanilla protein powder concoction (aka the things that we had handy in the fridge) and it was DELICIOUS.
Namaste Hey
I’ve been searching for a new yoga studio in my neighborhood, so I decided to do a week-long trial of Dou Yoga. So far, I like it! It’s not too far from my place, the schedule has some good vinyasa/alignment-focused options (before and after work), and the space itself is full of plants and big windows.
Reads
In super fun mid-week events: I was invited to the release party for Emma Straub’s newest book Modern Lovers. It was in Stone Fox Bride‘s gorgeous SoHo loft, and there were flower crowns and rosé wine and so many power women! Also, I tore through the book in just a couple of days: it has a diverse set of characters with an intriguing-but-also-realistic storyline set in Brooklyn. Perfect beach read!
Words
“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” -Susan B. Anthony
This weekend, we’re dog-sitting my favorite Frenchie: Simba! My boyfriend is also running the Brooklyn Half Marathon, so my friend Kate and I are going to ride bikes out to Coney Island to cheer on our men along the way! And then most importantly: WE PICK OUT OUR PUG ON SUNDAY.
