One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!Gertie the pug eating al fresco   We’ve officially hit the sticky part of summer in New York City: it is so gosh darn hot here right now! I can’t remember the last time I blow-dried my hair or actually wore it in anything other than a topknot, and I’ve realized that it just doesn’t make sense to wear makeup–I sweat it all off the minute I walk outside. That said, I absolutely love hot weather (the humidity, not so much) so I’ve been enjoying getting outside for bike rides, al fresco dinners and evening walks around the neighborhood. The snow will be here before we know it, so we have to enjoy this now!

VW Van in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn

Books

Americanah is 100% one of the best books that I’ve read in a long time. It focuses on a young Nigerian couple, and the lives they struggle to create in Nigeria, the USA and England. As a novel, it’s enthralling: the character development is layered and rich, with a plot that makes you want to keep turning the pages. And as social commentary, it is so worth reading–especially as a white American women.

Chinatown, New York City

New York City

I bike about seven miles each way on my commute to work each day, and it’s crazy how many different worlds it feels like I go through: a heavily Hasidic Jewish neighborhood, the chaos of Chinatown, hip and trendy NoLita, fancy brownstones in West Village, art galleries in Chelsea. Ample Hills ice cream in Brooklyn

Sweet Tooth

I’m actually a little embarrassed that I’ve been living in Brooklyn for as long as I have, and it’s taken me this long to try out Ample Hills. HOLY COW! It’s completely homemade and insanely delicious ice cream, and the original location is dangerously close to my apartment. I went for the signature flavor Salted Crack Caramel (two enthusiastic thumbs up) and Mexican Hot Chocolate on a PRETZEL CONE, and I’m already dreaming of going back to try more!

This weekend, we’re taking a vacation/staycation at the Time Nyack. It’s a tiny town less than an hour outside of the city, right on the Hudson River–and the Time has a pool AND is pup-friendly. Looking forward to introducing Gertie to hotel life!
