Postcard from the Cannes market
Market culture is one of my favorite things about France: when I lived in Nice, I used to go shopping at the local market a few times a week, discovering new ingredients like zucchini flowers and stocking up on plenty of fresh strawberries and tomatoes. I love the fresh, seasonal produce and the copious amount and wide variety of cheeses, and the gorgeous attention to detail that goes into the presentation. When I was in Cannes for a mere 48 hours, I stumbled over the thriving farmers market when I was out for a morning stroll and coffee/croissant. I couldn’t get over all of the gorgeous flowers: delicate, floaty “mountain” pink peonies and roses in every color of the rainbow and agapanthus, the likes of which I’d never seen cut and for sale in a flower market. We grew up with them taking over our shady side yard, but I’d never thought of them as something to buy! And when I spotted the most gorgeous strawberries, I couldn’t resist picking up a botte for an airport snack. It was such a lovely little adventure that encapsulated so much of what I love about France.
Side note: this French market-shopping woman is GOALS.
