Of the moment // 9.9.16
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend! My Timehop this week has reminded me just how tumultuous my last few Septembers have been. I was hired by ONA in September four years ago, and left ONA for a new opportunity at Vimeo two years ago. Two years ago, my roommate and BFF Aly decided to leave our apartment and move back to California; last year, I gave my roommate notice after my boyfriend and I signed a lease on our first place together. This September has started off to a similarly chaotic start with some significant changes in my position at work: I’m trying to channel all the zen, but I’m honestly just counting down until I head back to Sacramento next week for a few days of sunshine and relaxation.
Gym Vibes
I’ve long been a fan of mat pilates, but I tried out a Reformer class for the first time this week at New York Pilates. OH MY GOD IT WAS SO GOOD. The 50-minute beginner class wasn’t super intense, but I was sore in all the right places the next day! I’m totally hooked. Side note: I just signed up for ClassPass again for the five classes for $75 a month (currently $19 for your first month in NYC), so I’ll definitely be going back!
Reads
As predicted last week, I read The Couple Next Door in fewer than 24 hours. I legitimately could not put it down. If you liked The Girl on the Train or Gone Girl, definitely read this one.
New York City
Governors Island is one of my go-to summer activities: between the ferry ride and a bike ride without any cars, it combines two of my favorite things. This was my first trip this summer (I blame the pug!), and it was fun to see the newly opened lookout point and incredibly fun slides at the southern tip. Even though it was a little overcast, you still can’t beat the view of Manhattan from the island. Outfit notes: Everlane tank, AG jeans, Tropezienne sandals, Lo & Sons bag.
Drinks
We met up with friends (and our pug, and their baby) at Brooklyn Barge for sunset drinks, and it might just be my new favorite bar. You can’t beat that view or the breeze from the East River on a hot summer day!
Beauty
One of my basic beauty beliefs is that I’d rather invest more in quality skincare rather than makeup or crazy procedures (thanks, Mom!). I usually try to get a facial once a quarter, around when the seasons change, since that’s when my skin tends to act up. I just discovered Heyday, which has totally validated my habit: they’re a new facial shop that wants to make facials easier to fit into your wallet, schedule and skincare routine. I tried the 50-minute facial last weekend: it was completely customized for my skin, and my face positively glowed afterwards (bonus: a few sweat-induced zits cleared up very nicely too!). I’m totally tempted to become a 30-50 member for alternating monthly facials! p.s. if you mention my name, you get $10 off a facial!
Words
“Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.” -Mark Twain
This weekend, we’re enjoying the late summer weather in Brooklyn! I’m looking forward to some river walks, park hangs and a beach day (while my boyfriend is glued to the TV for the start of football season).
