Of the moment // 12.16.16
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend! We’ve officially entered my favorite part of the holiday season: Christmas movie watching! It’s one of my family’s most steadfast traditions, and even though I’m on the opposite coast, I still like to watch all the same movies I know they’re watching. We started with Home Alone last night, and I’m planning on carving out some time for the rest of our standards: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Holiday, Love Actually, White Christmas. David’s requesting a new one to be added to the mix: Die Hard! And since I’ve somehow gone all these years without watching It’s a Wonderful Life, I want to add that one to the list this year.
Looks
Gimlet had its holiday party earlier this week: it was a really lovely evening, and it was nice to have a few drinks with my new colleagues and their SO’s. We only snagged one photo on our way out the door, but I absolutely loved this dress that I got through Rent the Runway. It was super comfortable and flattering (not nearly as cleavage-y as the main photo makes it appear), and the Bordeaux color was perfect for a holiday party without being TOO bold.
Reads
I’m currently reading The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, and I feel like it should be required reading for every American. It’s incredible how much institutionalized racism is condoned in this country, and drives home the concept of white privilege very strongly. I also recommend 13th, a Netflix original that explores the criminalization of African Americans and the insane prison boom.
Pug Life
Reply All is one of my favorite Gimlet podcasts, and I recently discovered this episode about The Rainbow Pug! I’m becoming known as the crazy pug lady in the office and Gert has become a fan favorite, so it seemed only appropriate that someone would find me this amazing rainbow pug print. I think I’m going to hang it at my desk!
Words
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” -TS Eliot
This weekend, my book club is having a potluck dinner with plenty of wine and our plus ones. I’m also going to my favorite Pilates class–and plan on treating myself to a Balthazar hazelnut hot chocolate afterwards!
