Of the moment // 3.30.18
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!
This has been a week of PRIORITIZING and also a lot of early wakeup calls. Does anyone else have those spurts where it feels like you have a to-do list a mile long and everything on it feels like it should be finished first? My $1 productivity hack has been helping, but I’m still drowning a bit in emails to answer, blog posts to write, rooms to clean, people to see, and a whole lot of “day job” work. It’s been exacerbated lately with an extra dose of work travel and with my in-laws being in town: it’s tough to figure out how to get everything done (even when on an airplane) AND be totally present to enjoy time with friends and family AND make sure I’m prioritizing my health and self-care. Trying to remember to take it all one day at a time, but I’ve got to admit: I’m really looking forward to a hike this weekend as an opportunity to disconnect and really relax for a couple of hours.
Looks
Taking full advantage of my Flower Fields season pass: the ranunculus are in peak bloom! Had a lot of fun popping up and seeing all of the colors with a couple of girlfriends before breakfast last weekend.
Reads
Tore through two very different paperbacks this week. My mom gave me The Iron King, which I didn’t expect to like as much as I did! The cover and prologue are designed to appeal to Game of Thrones fans, and I didn’t read the books or watch the show. But! It reminded me a lot of the Fall of Giants trilogy, which I absolutely loved. The Iron King is basically a beach read for 14th century historical fiction: it’s based in true events, but with lots of drama and salacious details. I also sped through You Me Everything, which is a relationship-y beach read with a few very solid twists that keep it interesting. Also: mayyyyybe expect a few tears!
Drinks
David’s parents are in town, so we’ve been touring them around to all of our favorite San Diego spots. One of our favorite places to take out-of-towners is Mister A’s: the rooftop restaurant features incredible views of the city skyline, and you can watch all of the planes land at the waterfront airport. And although I think it’s a little expensive (aka a great place to go only when people are in from out of town!), it’s a really fun experience and the cocktails are superb.
Eats
I discovered my new favorite breakfast spot in the area: Nectarine Grove is healthy, organic, locally-sourced and DELICIOUS. The breakfast tacos with black beans were incredibly filling, and the butter coffee tasted as good as it made me feel. Everything on the menu is also gluten-free and there are a ton of paleo options, so I’m keeping it in my back pocket for when certain friends visit–also just looking for any excuse to go back!
Words
“Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” -Coco Chanel
This weekend, we’re hiking to Kitchen Creek Falls! I’m also hopping on the train up to Los Angeles on Sunday, where I’ll be for a few days of work and play next week.
