Of the moment // 4.6.18
One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!
I think I’ve offhand mentioned this once or twice, but in things that are getting real: my mom just sold her business this week and my parents are moving to Arizona this month! I lived on the same street in a suburb of Sacramento basically my entire life (literally, I moved down the same street three times–once into a house with the same floorplan as the previous!), so it’s going to be super weird to not have a “home” in Sacramento anymore. That said, two of my best friends have recently purchased homes (with guest rooms and puppies!), so I’ll definitely still be visiting the City of Trees. But I’m also looking forward to more visits to Phoenix, complete with red rock hiking trails and all-day winter pool sessions. I’m especially stoked for my mom heading into retirement: she built an incredibly successful business and has been a huge role model for entrepreneurship, and I can’t wait to see how she enjoys some well-deserved relaxation (aka golfing every single day).
San Diego
David’s sister was in town last weekend, and as part of our ongoing plot to have her move to San Diego (!), we wanted to show off something a bit different than just the beaches. One of the things that has really surprised me since moving here is how much hiking there is to do, and what a standard “weekend activity” it is for a lot of people. There are a ton of (small-ish) mountains and trails about 45 minutes to an hour inland, and they’re always packed the people getting in a few miles before brunch. We headed out to Kitchen Creek Falls on the Pacific Crest Trail (the same one that Cheryl Strayed hiked in Wild!), and it was a refreshing change of pace. There weren’t many day-hikers: it was mostly serious backpackers at the start of the 2,650-mile trail. Even though we only did about five miles total, it was really serene and a nice change of pace from the more typical San Diego weekend hikes. I don’t think doing the entire trail is ever in my future, but would love to go back and explore more portions of it!
Reads
Still working my way through all of the Tana French books–but I’m almost there! I started The Trespasser earlier this week, and it might be my favorite one already. I can’t wait to see what twists and turns are ahead!
Shows
I’m a sucker for cult content, and so I’m surprised it took me even this long to discover Wild Wild Country. It’s a six-part docuseries on Netflix all about a controversial cult’s expansion into a part of rural Oregon in the 1980’s, and it is FASCINATING. Every episode has a new twist I didn’t see coming. If you need something binge watch this weekend: I highly recommend.

This weekend, we’re checking out some street art and craft breweries with a couple of friends–in Tijuana! I am also overwhelmingly happy to be sleeping in my own bed.
