Of the moment // 7.6.18
We spent this week in Jackson Hole with my husband’s extended family, and holy moly, I had no idea Wyoming was so stunning! We stayed in Teton Village with his aunt and uncle who live here year-round (and are dedicated skiers, hikers and rock climbers, of course!), and I absolutely fell in love with this big-skied corner of the world.
It was an especially good reminder of how many incredible places there are in the United States to visit. I’ve been toying with the idea of setting a new states-driven travel goal for my 30s: I’ve been to about half, and I’d love to focus on visiting more national parks and more cities (and small towns, and wide open spaces) in the Midwest and the South.
Drinks
We extended our trip by flying into Salt Lake City a day early to meet David’s sister and her husband, and then roadtripping together up to Jackson Hole. A surprising highlight of our stay in Salt Lake City was cocktails at Pig & A Jelly Jar, a delightful and dog-friendly spot. I opted for a beer cocktail, with fresh-squeezed orange juice, grenadine and a citrusy IPA: so refreshing!
Workouts
I’m a Classpass devotee, and mostly keep in shape through barre, Pilates and megaformer classes–but it has been SO fun and challenging this week to do so much outdoor activity! My body is sore in so many nooks and crannies in the best possible way. On the 4th of July (aka the one day I didn’t have to be tied to my computer), I woke up and did a 4.5-mile, mostly uphill hike on my own and then did a 30-mile bike ride with the crew. It was my first time on a road bike in a loooong time, and let me tell you, those seats are NOT made for comfort. Still feeling it!
Reads
The toughest part of this very active family vacation has been wanting to spend the entire time curled up reading The Heart’s Invisible Furies by myself: I started it on my first day here, and it is SO good. I’ve been giving myself extra early bedtimes just to squeeze in 30 minutes or so of reading before going to sleep! It’s set in 1950s Ireland, which was not exactly the most welcoming place for independent women or gay men or basically anyone who wasn’t Catholic and in the Irish resistance. All of that said, it’s an environment with plenty of tension and conflict, aka all of the makings of a good book. Thoroughly enjoying it so far!
Words
“If you want one thing too much it’s likely to be a disappointment. The healthy way is to learn to like the everyday things, like soft beds and buttermilk—and feisty gentlemen.” -Larry McMurtry, (all of the Lonesome Dove vibes on this trip!)
This weekend, we’re heading back to California and I can’t wait to be home! I’m especially looking forward to beach book club on Sunday: we chose a beach read (The Favorite Sister) and we’re meeting up at a local beach for snacks and drinks to talk about the book–feels very San Diego!
