Of the moment // 8.17.18
It was been such a crazy week! Between work travel, moving into a new house and hosting some of my favorite friends in town from London: not a ton of time to stay on top of blog stuff.
To be honest, I felt so guilty last week for not getting an Of the moment post up last week: I try really hard to be reliable when it comes to posts here, and I probably put more pressure on myself than anyone else to meet those self-imposed deadlines. But I’m trying to be better about letting go of guilt like that and focus on what I can do differently next time. Namely: trying to get ahead of the calendar and get a few posts written in advance! I have grand plans this weekend for a coffee shop date with Gert (to let David sleep in after being such an awesome host last weekend–he was up and making coffee and egg sandwiches every day!) to get some posts slated for the weeks ahead. Taking requests, as always!
Movies
I saw the Crazy Rich Asians movie yesterday, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to see it this weekend! #1: the book (and the whole trilogy) is fantastic. My mom picked it up for me in an airport bookstore before it had all of the hype, and it is such a fun read! #2: as a traveler, I fell in love with the idea of visiting Singapore when I read the book and that was totally confirmed and heightened by the incredible scenes of the city from the movie. #3: it’s one of the first all Asian and Asian-American casts in a feature film, and it’s so huge to get that representation. I’ve been trying to read more books from different perspectives (aka not all white women or white males), and it’s been really rewarding: now trying to apply that same philosophy to movies! And it’s not hard when the movie is as good as Crazy Rich Asians: hit all of my favorite rom-com points, and beyond. Go see it!
Looks
After taking a little break from Unlimited, I’m back on Rent the Runway Update! As much as I loved Unlimited, I couldn’t really take full advantage of it: #1 it takes a while for things to ship back and forth from New Jersey to California and #2 I didn’t have enough opportunities to wear all of the cute things! Real talk: I am in leggings and T-shirts and sneakers 90% of the time working from home. So! I switched to their new Update option, which is four pieces per month. So far, it’s a great way to get some fun new things (vacation! a wedding next week! a very flattering jumpsuit that I’ve been wearing for every activity where I leave my house!) without being overwhelmed.
Drinks
You and Yours Distillery is one of my favorite places for an excellent cocktail in San Diego: the drinks are incredible, and the tasting room has a super stylish and laid-back ambiance. When we went to dinner at Brooklyn Girl a few weeks ago, our waiter was telling us about this cool cocktail that his girlfriend (the head bartender at Y&Y!) had created. It’s called the Mood Ring and it literally CHANGES COLORS in front of your eyes. Cocktail chemistry! It was really cool to watch, and tasted delicious–although it had some heavy vanilla vibes, and I have to say, I was a little jealous of the spicy and refreshing options that our friends ordered. Either way, definitely worth ordering just to see the color change in front of you!
Reads
When David goes for an evening surf, I’ve been tagging along for a walk and read on the beach. It’s such a treat! I’m currently reading The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair That Changed America–it’s by the same author of Dead Wake, which I really enjoyed. I love those sorts of nonfiction where you feel totally immersed in the time and the place. Also: I finished Us Against You last week, which was very true to Fredrick Backman’s style. Can’t quite decide if I love that style, but it does always make me think differently and keep turning to the last page!
Beauty
I’m working on an updated skincare routine post for next week (see: things I’m doing this weekend!) but am having one of those nice spurts where I’m feeling really good about my skin without makeup. Turning 30 has made me so much more aware of my forehead wrinkles and neck jiggliness (is that a word? It’s definitely a feeling), and so I am at least thoroughly enjoying having a bit of a break from breakouts. I’ve been wearing a lot less makeup than usual, even when “going out” and it feels very California!

This weekend, I’m mostly enjoying a laid-back weekend in San Diego! Can’t wait to try a new coffee shop and a new workout studio in our new neighborhood.
