Of the moment // 10.19.18
Did you see the New York Times’ #ThisIs18 feature on 18-year-old women around the world? I thought it was so enthralling and eye-opening to the vastly different experiences of young women around the world: if you haven’t read it yet, definitely suggest taking a look. It also made me think about what my life was like at 18!
When I was 18, I was sophomore in college (because I skipped a grade, I graduated high school at 16). Most of that year was spent figuring out what I was going to major in (journalism!) and agonizing over priorities (I quit the lacrosse team after hurting my knee again, and wasn’t sure where I’d fit in after a lifetime of playing sports) and going to a lot of parties (I lived in a house with eight other girls, so we threw our fair share too!). But right after I turned 18 and before I went back to school in the fall, I went to Italy with a group of friends. It was my first time traveling to a country other than France, and my first time in a country where I didn’t speak the language. I think that was when I really fell in love with going to new places and experiencing new cultures and that little bit of lost-ness that comes with it. Looking back, I’m so grateful that that seed was planted right on the verge of adulthood…now if only I could go back to my 18-year-old self and tell her to study abroad!
Drinks
It’s been a while since I was impressed by a latte, but this colorful option at The Butcher, The Baker, The Cappuccino Maker blew me away. Bonus: it was just as delicious as it was pretty!
Podcasts
A few new solid additions to my podcast queue: Second Life and The Cut on Tuesdays! Second Life is an interview series hosted by the founder of Who What Wear where she talks to women who started a second career, like Emily Henderson and the founder of Sugarfina. It’s an interesting insight into some of my favorite companies and online personalities, and it definitely leaves me feeling inspired. I’m also obsessed with the The Cut’s new weekly show that digs into all sorts of women’s issues, from skincare to politics to power. Highly recommend both!
Shows
I finalllllly started watching Insecure and I’m obsessed. Issa Rae is a treasure, and I can’t wait to finish the third season. Any other fans?!
Words
“If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week.” -Charles Darwin
This weekend, I’m excited to hang out with friends in San Diego: a pup-friendly beach picnic, seeing Selena at Rooftop Cinema Club (!) and having book club al fresco.
