One of the best decisions I ever made was choosing to go to Chico State. Tucked away in that tiny college town in Butte County, just an hour and half north of my hometown of Sacramento, I met some of my best friends and learned so much about journalism, business and life. Looking back, my biggest regret was spending too much time in the bars (and the library!) instead of exploring the beautiful hiking trails and swimming holes throughout the county.
It’s been horrifying to watch the devastation of the Camp Fire tear through Paradise and surrounds, to realize that the deadliest wildfire in state history is still blazing right next to my beloved college town. I truly can’t express how awful it’s felt to see Chico State in the New York Times for the worst possible reason. That said, I’ve been moved by how quickly the student, faculty and alumni community has banded together to support those who have lost everything in the fire. If you’re looking for a place to donate and make a difference, I recommend the Wildcats Rise fund and the Butte Humane Society.
Drinks
Obviously, I’m such a big fan of the Union Wine Company cans–but I didn’t realize they have bottles too! Such a nice addition to our bar cart, although I’m not sure how long they’ll stick around there..I’m already itching to have some friends over and crack open the pinot noir. p.s. if you use code CHRISTINEWINE25 until 11/26, you can get 25% off your order AND free shipping from the Union Wine Company online store! Perfect time to stock up on some bubbles OR a can where 100% of profits support Planned Parenthood. Cheers!
Shows
Anyone else watching the second season of Making a Murderer?! The issues with our justice system are just as shocking and disheartening as ever, although this season does bring in the no-nonsense defense attorney Kathleen Zellner who has been working to get innocent people out of jail.
Beauty
I got my nails done earlier this week, and what I thought would be a punchy raspberry…is actually neon Barbie hot pink! It’s definitely a lot brighter than anticipated and I debated switching over halfway through–but I always feel so guilty about doing that, and I figure it’s only two weeks out of my life with this ridiculous color. YOLO, right?!
Reads
I picked up the Call the Midwife memoir when I was in a used bookstore a couple of weeks ago. I loved the show on PBS, and I loved the book even more–although it actually made me want to watch the show again, ha! It’s this incredible look at a time that feels so foreign: the East End of London in the 1950s, a time before birth control and before hospital births. And midwifery! What an art. Such a wonderful memoir.
Words
“Love empowers us to live fully and die well. Death becomes, then, not an end to life but a part of living.” -bell hooks
This weekend, we’re heading up to Los Angeles…and then flying to London and Estonia for the week! We’re so excited to catch up with friends (David’s best friend and best man moved to London last year), go to some Christmas markets and drink all of the mulled wine.
